Teri Swezy, daughter of the late Mary Swezy of Cambria, has begun her more than 3,000-mile walk across the U.S. on behalf of senior-citizen causes. Her journey began Sunday, April 1, in Wrightsville Beach, N.C. and is to end about six or seven months later in Cambria.
The “SOAR Feat 2012” walk honors Mary Swezy of Cambria, who died at age 88 in July 2010.
Swezy posted this Twitter tweet on April 3: “Walked 15 miles Day 1 & 12 Day 2. Stopped at Kure Beach so we could catch the Ft. Fisher Ferry. Starting Day 3 from Southport ferry.”
The day before, she’d gotten a late start due to a dead cell phone, but she’d soldiered on and met her goal anyway.
Swezy hopes to raise $180,000 in donations for senior centers, senior-care programs, prescription copays, wheelchairs, meal programs for seniors and those on low incomes and relief services for caregivers.
Swezy’s hiking itinerary is to take her through North and South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada and California.
A welcome-home party is to take place at Cambria’s Joslyn Recreation Center.
