The Bronco baseball team made the two-and-a-half hour, 137- mile trek to Laton High School on Friday, March 26, expecting to face a team they would seem to match up well against. After all, Laton is among the rare schools in the conference with fewer students (222) than Coast Union’s enrollment of 228 (as of Jan. 31).
But Coast Union was caught off-guard by a strong-armed Laton Mustang pitcher who threw “… the hardest our team has seen, by far,” Machado reported. Indeed, 16 Bronco hitters went down to strikeouts in the 6-3 loss. Coast Union’s record is now 2-6.
Batter after batter went down swinging so Machado launched a classic baseball strategy using a time-tested weapon: the bunt. “We had two bunts, had the bases
loaded, had him all shook up” — but the first baseman and third baseman began playing way in and the bases-loaded bunt turned into a force-out at home.
Never miss a local story.
Jaime Torres had two hits and drove in a run with a double, while Jake Machado tripled another run in for Coast Union.
Those same Laton Mustangs come to Coast Union Friday, April 2, and Machado was asked what coaching advice he is giving his hitters to avoid the strikeouts this time around.
The 3:30 game Friday, April 2, will be broadcast live on KTEAFM 103.5 — and streams live on www.ktea-fm.com.
