The Cambria Tourism Board will host a free information session about planning for visitor safety, featuring Cambria Fire Chief William Hollingsworth, at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27, at Pelican Suites, 6316 Moonstone Beach Drive, Cambria.
Lodging and tourist-related business managers and employees, and others concerned with visitor safety, are invited to attend.
New visitor-information cards, prepared by the Cambria Fire Safe Focus Group, will be available. For details, call 805-927-4274 to talk to Susan McDonald, who said the cards are the first of their kind in the region.
In case of fire, earthquake, storms, road closures or other emergency, the cards give visitors the agency-contact information that can help them access the latest available information about the situation. Phone numbers, website and social media links, and apps are on the card, to help folks stay safe, especially those unfamiliar with Cambria and the region.
An initial set of 5,000 cards was printed for distribution to hotels, B&Bs, vacation rentals, the Cambria Chamber of Commerce, Hearst Castle and other tourist-serving venues and businesses. The cards, designed by Barnett Cox & Associates, with a photo by Nancy McKarney of Cambria, were developed by the Focus Group. Costs were covered by the San Luis Obispo County Fire Safe Council.
A similar card is being prepared for area residents.
Cambria’s Fire Safe Focus Group has worked the past 18 months to inform the local community about the importance of planning ahead and being prepared in case of wildfire or other emergency. While continuing that effort, the group believes it is also important to provide safety information to visitors in a matter-of-fact manner, without causing alarm.
