The Avila Beach Community Foundation recently granted $2,500 to the Cancer Well-fit program.
The matching grant will help cover program costs at Avila Bay Athletic Club & Spa , which provides specialized exercise training and health coaching to first-year cancer survivors.
“Our mission is to financially support programs and projects that help enhance the quality of life in Avila Beach for all ages, and this grant is another great example,” said Rick Cohen, executive director of the foundation.
Grants totaling $52,950 were given to 13 organizations for the 2016 calendar year, according to the foundation.
The Food Bank Coalition of San Luis Obispo County has received a $9,800 grant from The Community Foundation San Luis Obispo County, which will be used to support its Children’s Farmers Market program.
The after-school and summer farmers market programs are free and take place monthly in high-need neighborhoods. Each child receives a bag and Food Bank Bucks — pretend $1 bills — for buying 15 pounds of fresh produce. Older kids volunteer at produce stations, and nutrition educators hand out tastings and recipes to show families how to cook with unfamiliar foods.
