San Miguel man accused in shooting is a Paso High assistant football coach

closeThe San Miguel man who allegedly shot a Paso Robles woman just before midnight Friday is an assistant football coach at Paso Robles High School, police confirmed Monday.
School officials could not be reached to determine if Steven Smith, 26, is still employed with the school.
He’s being held in County Jail on suspicion of attempted murder in lieu of $500,000 bail.
The woman, whose name police are not disclosing because she is the alleged victim in a domestic violence case, is recovering at a local hospital. She is expected to survive her injuries, police said, which include three shots to the chin, forehead and hand with small caliber handgun.
She is also 36 weeks pregnant with Smith’s child, police said, and the baby is also OK, police said.
The pair was apparently fighting because Smith was trying to end the relationship with the victim, police said, and she didn’t want it to end.
The woman's 15-year-old daughter, whose name police are also not disclosing, made the 911 call. After the shooting, Smith left the Paso Robles home where the woman was shot and was later detained in San Miguel by sheriff's officials and turned over to the Paso Robles Police Department.
