A woman died in San Miguel this afternoon in what the Sheriff’s Department described as a shooting in an apartment complex.
The incident was reported as an accidental shooting about 2:15 p.m., department spokesman Rob Bryn said. He declined to give the victim’s name or age, saying that the department is still trying to notify her next of kin.
The shooting took place along the 500 block of 11th Street, Bryn said.
San Miguel Fire Department officials reported the shooting while they were at the complex to do a routine construction permit inspection.
The fire officials were greeted by someone who claimed to have accidentally discharged a firearm, striking another person inside.
The woman had been shot in the chest and CPR was attempted as soon as medics arrived, according to radio dispatches from the scene.
After more emergency responders arrived, they determined the woman was dead.
He said that detectives, coroners and forensic specialists would conduct the investigation as a homicide until there’s proof it was an accident, Bryn said.
That is normal procedure for these types of cases, he added
