An open house will be held May 16 at the Cal Poly Pier in Avila Beach.
The family-friendly event, which runs from 9 a.m. to noon, will feature interactive displays, including tanks that allow visitors to touch the live marine creatures and microscopes for viewing miniature sea creatures and an introduction to scuba.
Cal Poly professors and students will be on hand to explain their research on local marine biology, including protection of Morro Bay’s ecosystem and preserving fish populations, as well as mapping ocean currents. There’s also a walking tour. The pier is a little more than a half-mile long, with displays located at the ocean end. People are asked to wear closed-toe shoes for the walking tour.
