The program is designed to address the growing number of former military servicemen and women entering the criminal justice system as a result of traumatic experiences encountered during their service.
Superior Court Judge John Trice — himself a retired Air Force colonel — presides over the program and attempts to connect participants with treatment and rehabilitation options available through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs if their offenses are considered related to post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injuries, sexual trauma or other triggers related to their military service.
Four veterans are scheduled to graduate Monday, the second group of veterans to complete the local program since it was implemented in June 2013. Participants have spent the last 12 to 18 months working with treatment specialists, county staff and mentors and have appeared before the court twice a month to report progress.
Never miss a local story.
The graduation will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in Department 10 of the San Luis Obispo Superior Courthouse.
