One man died and another person remained in critical condition Monday evening following a head-on collision in San Luis Obispo that afternoon that blocked traffic for more than an hour on Foothill Boulevard.
At about 2:15 p.m., a Toyota Prius traveling north on Foothill Boulevard veered into the southbound lane and struck a Ford Escape approximately a quarter mile east of Los Osos Valley Road, according to CHP Officer Richard Lee.
Both drivers remained trapped in their vehicles until emergency crews arrived and freed them using hydraulic saws, according to a Cal Fire spokesman.
The drivers were taken by ambulance to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center with major injuries.
At 4:40 p.m., the CHP announced that the male driver of the Ford had died of his injuries. The driver of the Toyota remained in critical condition, Lee said.
Neither driver was identified Monday.
Although the investigation was ongoing Monday night, Lee said drugs were suspected to have been a factor in the crash.
Following the collision, the CHP blocked off the stretch of Foothill Boulevard between the scene of the crash and Los Osos Valley Road to both directions of traffic until the vehicles were removed. Lee said traffic returned to normal by 3:50 p.m.
According to Cal Fire, San Luis Obispo fire and police departments and the CHP assisted in responding to the accident.
