Blades on Ice will be re-opening Friday at its same temporary location on El Camino Real across from Sunken Gardens in downtown Atascadero, company officials said this week.
The seasonal skating venture, spearheaded by local dad Derek Ehinger, will once again offer public ice skating, hockey leagues, kids hockey clinics, skating lessons, adult-only sessions “and other special events such as our first annual holiday skate show,” said Theresa Anselmo, who runs the ice rink’s skating lessons program.
Ehinger ran into some operational snags this summer when he tried to get a plywood floor permitted while converting his ice rink into a roller rink. Those plans were then scrapped, and Ehinger instead focused on reopening for the ice season. He's allowed to operate there until March 2015.
Ehinger started first opening his Atascadero ice rink in December 2012 under a tent in a church parking lot off Highway 41. In December 2013, he moved to an empty lot slated to become the La Plaza Downtown Retail Center.
Ehinger wants to eventually find land to build a permanent ice arena in Atascadero, and he says the temporary skating attractions help bring awareness and investors to that effort.
