A 79-year-old man walked onto Highway 101 in Atascadero on Monday afternoon and was struck by an SUV, according to the California Highway Patrol.
At about 3:30 p.m., a 2003 Toyota Sequoia was hauling a utility trailer south on the highway just north of Del Rio Road when a man, identified as Jo Lillis of Chico, Calif., for unknown reasons attempted to walk across the highway. The driver swerved to avoid Lillis, but the right side of the trailer hit him, causing major but non-life-threatening injuries.
He was taken to Twin Cities Community Hospital. None of the three people inside the vehicle were injured.
The incident was still under investigation Monday evening, though the CHP said in a news release that neither drugs nor alcohol are suspected to be factors.
