A caravan of vintage cars will make its way from Yosemite National Park to the city of Morro Bay in October in a joint anniversary celebration of State Parks and the city.
The From the Summit to the Sea event will take place Oct. 22-24 in a journey across the middle of the state. Up to 150 participants seeking to cruise with other classic car enthusiasts along the 185 miles stretch of Highway 41— a route that travels from the mountain peaks of Yosemite through the agricultural flatlands of Fresno to the Morro Bay oceanfront — can sign up for the event.
The ride celebrates the 150th anniversary of the Yosemite Grant, the 150th anniversary of the California State Parks and the 50th anniversary of the cityhood of Morro Bay.
The Yosemite Grant, passed by Congress in 1864, created California’s first state park in the Yosemite Valley and Mariposa Grove. Yosemite’s era as a state park ended in 1916 when it became Yosemite National Park.
Never miss a local story.
“The nostalgic car craze is bigger than ever,” said event coordinator Karin Moss. “We expect the event to attract people of all ages to participate or come to enjoy the show.”
Those in attendance will gather on Oct. 22 for a hosted celebratory barbecue in the Sierra Nevada foothills town of Oakhurst. After spending the night in Oakhurst, on Oct. 23 they’ll travel 140 miles south on Highway 41, stopping for lunch at the Jack Ranch Café in arid Cholame, known for its James Dean theme.
Dean famously died on that stretch of road in a fiery Sept. 30, 1955 crash in his Porsche 550 Spyder.
After lunch, the vehicles will continue on to Morro Bay, about 80 miles away. The arrival in Morro Bay will coincide with a sunset photo at Morro Rock, where people can come to watch the lineup of classic vehicles.
“Yosemite is clearly the monument of the summit, while Morro Rock is the monument to the sea,” Morro Bay Mayor Jamie Irons said in a statement. “This celebration showcases three iconic anniversaries, which Morro Bay is proud to be a part of.”
