Anyone interested in learning more about the South County police departments is invited to participate in the South County Citizens Police Academy starting Sept. 6.
The free classes will be held for nine Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon at the Grover Beach City Council chambers, 154 S. Eighth St. Participants will learn about the Arroyo Grande, Grover Beach and Pismo Beach police departments, a news release said.
Topics will include community-oriented policing, patrol procedures, dispatch communications, investigations, criminal justice systems, traffic control and records systems.
The goal is to inform participants about the challenges and opportunities in policing — but the academy is not designed to make the participant a police officer. The class is a prerequisite, however, for anyone who wants to participate in the South County Police Volunteer program.
For information, contact Pismo Beach Police Sgt. Tom Portz at firstname.lastname@example.org or at 596-5433, or Pismo Beach Police Administrative Secretary Julie Castaneda at 773-7029.
