The son of former Lt. Gov. Abel Maldonado was a passenger in a truck that struck and killed a Chula Vista man riding a recumbent bicycle last week in Santa Maria.
Mathew Troy O’Neil, 33, was killed after a Chevrolet pickup truck hauling a horse trailer traveling west on Foxen Canyon Road east of Dominion Road attempted to pass O’Neil and struck the rear of his bicycle.
O’Neil suffered fatal injuries at the scene, according to the California Highway Patrol. No other details were released.
Abel Nicolas Maldonado, 18, of Santa Maria, son of former state Sen. and Santa Maria Mayor Abel Maldonado, was a passenger in the pickup; the CHP is not releasing the name of the 16-year-old driver.

Drugs or alcohol were not considered a factor in the collision.
According to several bicycling enthusiast websites, O’Neil was a popular figure in the Southern California bicycling scene.
The incident marks the second time Nicolas Maldonado has been involved in a fatal collision on the same stretch of Foxen Canyon Road. In August 2012, a Santa Maria man was killed when he failed to stop at a stop sign and drove in front of a Cadillac Escalade driven by Maldonado’s mother, Laura Maldonado, according to the CHP. Nicolas Maldonado was a passenger and suffered minor injuries in that incident.
The CHP said the investigation into the recent crash was still ongoing Friday afternoon.
