Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant Unit 2 was taken offline Sunday by Pacific Gas and Electric Co. to perform scheduled maintenance on electrical equipment located on the non-nuclear side of the plant.
The unit’s lightning arrestors, which are located outside of the main facility and help move power to the state’s electric grid, are being cleaned, according to a company news release. “The work can only be performed safely when electricity is not being generated,’’ PG&E said. Such work is typically performed annually, according to spokesman Thomas Cuddy.
He declined to say how long the maintenance might last, saying that "due to energy market trading sensitivities, we do not disclose the duration of planned outages."
Similar work was completed on Unit 1 lightning arrestors last weekend, Cuddy said. The unit is currently operating at full power.
