A Nipomo man suspected of driving under the influence of drugs struck and severed a utility pole Wednesday morning, causing a minor power outage in Santa Maria.
According to the Santa Maria Police Department, around 4:26 a.m., a Hyundai SUV driven by Michael Thomas Kolsbun, 53, struck a street light pole as well as the utility pole on the 100 block of East Donovan Road. Damage to the utility pole caused a power outage in the area near the crash.
City crews and PG&E employees responded to the scene to repair the damage and restore power.
Kolsbun was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. He was taken to Marian Regional Medical Center in Santa Maria after complaining of pain. As of late Wednesday morning, he remained in treatment at the facility.
According to officials, Kolsbun will be charged with DUI upon release from the hospital.
