After money raised for a Paso Robles girl with cancer was stolen, firefighters have offered to help replace the missing funds.
The Paso Robles Professional Firefighters Union announced Friday that it has issued a fundraising challenge to raise money for Madelyn Gonzales, 6, who was recently diagnosed with lymphocytic leukemia, a type of blood cancer most often seen in children. Madelyn and her family have been traveling each week to Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara for her treatment, which has placed a financial burden on the family.
While the family has received donations from the community for travel expenses, toys and movies, about two weeks ago two unknown people stole a donation jar containing money raised for Madelyn. After learning of the theft, the Paso Robles Professional Firefighters Union Local 4148 decided to match every dollar donated to the Gonzales family up to $500.
Donations can be made at Bronco Burger restaurant at Union and Golden Hill roads.
