A dog from San Luis Obispo won Best of Breed on Monday at the American Kennel Club’s Westminster Dog Show in New York City.
The 2-year-old rough-haired female Brussels griffon, Cashin’s Sizzling Bacon Bit, is owned by Felicia Cashin of San Luis Obispo.
Cashin said she was delighted that Bacon, as the dog is known, did so well considering her lack of competitive experience. “We weren’t expecting this win,” the owner said.
Bacon was up against another local dog — a 3-year-old Brussels griffon named Paragons Sharp Dressed Man at Greengates, or Sharpie for short.
Sharpie won the Best of Opposite prize, which is given to the dog selected as the best in competition of the opposite sex of the Best of Breed winner.
Sharpie — co-owned by Cashin, Mary Gale of Roseville, Calif., and breeder Kathy Fleener of Tucson, Ariz. — won Best of Breed at last year’s competition.
