Cal Poly officials confirmed on Monday that the pedestrian killed on South Higuera Street early Saturday morning was a business student at Cal Poly.
Cal Poly spokesman Matt Lazier confirmed that Kent Boswell, 22, of San Luis Obispo was a fourth-year student studying finance in the Orfalea College of Business.
Lazier had no further information Monday morning but said that a campuswide email is expected to be released soon.
According to a San Luis Obispo Police Department news release, Boswell was struck by a vehicle driven by 25-year-old Arroyo Grande resident John Hooper, who was traveling south on South Higuera near Los Osos Valley Road, at approximately 4:50 a.m. Saturday.
According to the release, Boswell was struck while in the roadway, where he remained when emergency personnel arrived.
In regards to Hooper, investigators do not believe drugs or alcohol played a factor in the collision, and he has not been charged with any wrongdoing.
Administrators of the Orfalea College of Business declined to comment or provide any details Monday afternoon about Boswell’s academic career at the university.
San Luis Obispo police Sgt. Brian Amoroso said Monday evening that the investigation remains underway and results from a toxicology report from Boswell will be released in the coming weeks.
