An elderly Cayucos man was found dead inside his car after he apparently drove it into a house on Hacienda Drive in Cayucos on Saturday afternoon.
Authorities have not released the name of the 79-year-old man.
Passersby saw the car jammed against the house and stopped to investigate, then called 911 at about 12:52 p.m. when they saw the driver inside, said CHP Officer Darren Gennuso. Gennuso said he was the first to arrive and found the man unresponsive. Paramedics took the driver to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, Gennuso said.
The man apparently had been alone in the car when he, for an unknown reason, drove into the house. The homeowners were gone and no one else was injured, Gennuso said.
Investigators will examine the car to see if there was a mechanical malfunction, and an autopsy will determine whether the driver had a medical condition that caused the crash, he said.
"It looks like he hit the property at a slow rate of speed," Gennuso said. "The damage to the car didn't warrant a fatal injury."
