San Luis Obispo was once again named one of the “best towns” in the United States — and this time it has Cal Poly to thank for the distinction.
SLO ranked third on Travel and Leisure’s “Best College Towns” list in November, just below Burlington, Vt., (home of The University of Vermont, Burlington College and Champlain College) and Charlottesville, Va., (home of the University of Virginia).
It was the only West Coast town to make the 20-city list. Most of the towns on the list were East Coast and Southern university towns.
San Luis Obispo gained the distinction for its free outdoor summer concerts, the annual International Film Festival, coffee places, wineries and “plethora of outdoor activities,” according to the magazine.
Winners were chosen based on survey results for 744 nominated towns. The travel magazine also selected the top cities in 55 other categories such as farmers markets, museums, adventure/travel and family-friendly hotels.
