The drizzly weather didn’t deter students throughout San Luis Obispo County from making the trip to school on foot Wednesday in conjunction with International Walk to School Day.
Students walked alongside parents, teachers and community leaders at 25 participating schools to create awareness of the health benefits of walking and as a reminder that safe paths to walk and bike to school are critical.
At Hawthorne Elementary School in San Luis Obispo, more than 147 students participated. At Oceano Elementary, school more than 200 students joined in.
“It is a good reminder that walking doesn’t necessarily take much more time in the mornings,” said Angela Nelson, program coordinator with SLO Regional Rideshare. “It also reminds people who may not have kids in school to be aware of walking children and slow down.”
