An Arroyo Grande boy was honored Thursday with the Sheriff’s 911 Hero Award for assisting an elderly neighbor through an emergency.
Eleven-year-old Samuel Waterman, a dog walker in Arroyo Grande, was walking home when he heard a cry for help. He investigated and discovered an elderly woman who had slipped and fallen in her home and had been lying immobile for nearly 28 hours, according to a news release.
Waterman immediately called 911, directed emergency crews to the woman’s home, stayed with her while they assessed her condition, made her something to eat and drink, and even walked and fed her small dog.
“Sam is a true hero,” San Luis Obispo County Sheriff Ian Parkinson said at the award ceremony. “Even though he's just 11 years old, he had the presence of mind to assess the situation and take action. And in doing so, he saved the life of his neighbor.”
