The Cal Poly sorority Kappa Kappa Gamma will move into the former Sanitarium bed and breakfast on Osos Street in San Luis Obispo.
The Planning Commission approved the change in use Wednesday with a 5-1 vote. Planning Commissioner William Riggs dissented. The approval is final unless the decision is appealed in the next 10 days to the City Council.
The two-story white building, on the southeast corner of Leff and Osos streets, known historically as the Hageman Sanitarium, was built with a neoclassical design and semicircular archways on the front porch and second-story balcony. It is on the master list of historic properties in the city.
The use permit approved by the Planning Commission stipulates that only 10 people can live in the nine-room building at one time. A cap of 15 people was also put on meetings and gatherings. The sorority is required to get approval from city Community Development Director Derek Johnson to host more people on the property.
