San Luis Obispo County supervisors Tuesday authorized spending $20,000 to clean up and secure an abandoned property in Shandon that was a source of worry for many residents of the rural community.
The money will be used to remove trash, scrap metal and abandoned vehicles and other debris at the property at 480 Mesa Grande Drive in Shandon. An incomplete home on the site will be boarded up and the property fenced off to prevent unauthorized access.
The property had been an eyesore and safety hazard in the community for more than a year.
“This has been a long, long process that has made the community nervous,” Supervisor Frank Mecham said.
Never miss a local story.
In July, supervisors held a nuisance abatement hearing and ordered the owners to clean up the property by Aug. 23. No cleanup has taken place, and a lien will placed on the property to recover the $20,000 cleanup costs.
The contractor who will conduct the cleanup will also monitor the property for a year.
