Construction has begun on Atascadero’s new library expansion project.
On Friday, elected officials celebrated during a groundbreaking ceremony at the new library site near downtown.
The work will transform the interior of an existing 22,000-square-foot building at 6555 Capistrano Ave. into a mixed-use structure that will house the library as well San Luis Obispo County offices for a North County Services Center.
The new library will be twice the the size of the current library on Morro Road and add areas for youth programs and more computers with public Internet access.
Construction was delayed for several months earlier this year when the San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors threw out initial bids due to a contractor dispute, disappointing supporters who had hoped the work would be done for the city's 100th birthday this year.
The opening is now slated for early 2014.
