Police on Monday identified the man who died after his boat capsized near the south jetty in Morro Bay this weekend.
Christopher Castro, 53, of Bakersfield, was one of two boaters who ended up in the water after their craft overturned Sunday morning, the Morro Bay Police Department said.
Police did not identify a younger boater who escaped with minor injuries.
According to police, two surfers spotted the capsized boat and called the emergency phone located at a nearby sandspit at 7:37 a.m.
Rescuers from the Morro Bay Fire Department, Morro Bay Police Department, Morro Bay Harbor Patrol, U.S. Coast Guard and California State Parks launched a search for the boaters.
Members of the fire department and harbor patrol pulled Castro from the water and began CPR at 7:55 a.m., police said, before transporting him to a Coast Guard vessel.
Castro was then taken by ambulance to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
The Morro Bay Police Department and California States Park recovered the boat several hours later.
