Retiring Atascadero firefighter Frank Sommers will be recognized for his 35 years of service at the Atascadero City Council’s next meeting, the city announced.
Sommers, retiring as a reserve firefighter, began his career with the Atascadero Fire District in 1978 and transferred to the Atascadero City Fire Department when the city incorporated in 1979, according to a city news release.
Described by city leaders as someone who always lends a hand, Sommers led several projects at the Atascadero Fire Department, including a major remodel of Fire Station No. 1, and he also shared expertise on how to develop the department’s Disaster Response Trailer, officials said. Sommers was also a three-time firefighter union president.
“His dedication to his family, the community and our city is truly inspirational,” Mayor Tom O’Malley said in a statement.
He was helped the city recover from the 2003 San Simeon Earthquake by wiring the electricity for the temporary Atascadero City Hall when city offices were displaced by the damage, according to the news release.
The council meeting is planned for 6 p.m. May 28 at City Hall.
