UPDATE 10:30 a.m.: The fire appears to be accidental, though Cal Fire is still investigating the cause, according to a news release from the agency.
Original story: Cal Fire investigators are crediting a smoke alarm for saving the life of a woman who escaped from a house fire in Nipomo on Friday.
At about 4:30 a.m., fire crews responded to a report of a fire in the 500 block of Silver Leaf Court.
When they arrived, heavy smoke and flames were coming out of the front of the house, which a female resident had already evacuated, Cal Fire Battalion Chief Paul Lee said.
“We credit the smoke detector to saving her life. Without it, we think she would have perished in the fire,” Lee said.
No injuries were reported.
It took about 15 minutes to get the fire under control, Lee said.
The total loss at the roughly 2,000-square-foot home was valued at about $150,000.
The cause is still being investigated.
Friday’s incident is a good reminder for the public to replace batteries in smoke detectors and make sure they are working, Lee said.
