Alex Maier, the San Luis Obispo High School student injured in a vehicle accident earlier this week, died Wednesday night, said an official with Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center.
Ron Yukelson, a spokesman for the hospital, said Maier was officially declared dead at 5:25 p.m. He had been on life support as part of his treatment at the hospital.
Maier, 17, was driving a Ford F-150 south on Highway 101 at 8:30 p.m. Monday when he accidentally clipped a BMW sedan near the Montalban Street exit in San Luis Obispo, the CHP said.
His truck spun out of control, then flipped onto its roof as it hit a guardrail. Maier had to be extricated from the pickup by firefighters. He was then taken to Sierra Vista.
Never miss a local story.
Maier was a senior on the boys varsity soccer team and was one of the leading scorers this year, according to San Luis Obispo High School principal Leslie O’Connor.
San Luis Obispo High students showed their support of Maier in vigils at the hospital, in online postings and in cards to the family. A group of students gathered during the school day Wednesday to spell out 23 on a field at the campus, which was his jersey number.
Members of the boys and girls soccer teams visited Maier in the hospital earlier Wednesday afternoon to read cards and notes to him; some said their goodbyes.
