Firefighters saved a 54-unit Cal Poly student housing building Sunday from what the San Luis Obispo City Fire Department is calling a “suspicious” fire that began on top of a mattress in a vacant, locked bedroom.
Twenty-five emergency personnel responded to reports of smoke just after noon to Stenner Glen Apartments at 1050 Foothill Ave., where they found thick, black smoke billowing from a bedroom window on the second floor of Tower 7. The fire could have spread to multiple units of the building, according to a news release issued by the Fire Department.
Firefighters said it was difficult to navigate the complex, which has 11 towers of three stories each, but they pulled a firetruck into the pool area and used a hose to extinguish the fire at the bedroom where it started.
No one was injured, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Never miss a local story.
Battalion Chief Neal Berryman said that, because there was very little in the room, it is “hard to make a guess” about the cause, but at this point, he believes a person may have been in the room when it started, possibly smoking or using matches.
