San Luis Obispo will not host the Amgen Tour of California professional cycling race in May as city officials had originally had hoped.
AEG, the Los Angeles-based sports and entertainment company that coordinates the race, recently changed the proposed route and asked the city to consider being a stage finish, not a starting point as originally proposed.
The change made it too expensive, said Assistant City Manager Michael Codron, adding that the city would consider participating in future years.
In October, AEG approached the city through Bob Stapleton of High Road Sports seeking its participation. The city’s Tourism Business Improvement District agreed to spend $30,440 for the event. That money would have mostly been in donations of hotel rooms, city services such as police, roadblocks, permits and trash pickup, and meals for the tour crew and teams.
The host cities for the 2013 race are expected be announced by AEG this month.
