A crash late Sunday night near Shandon killed a Kettleman City resident and injured three others.
According to the California Highway Patrol, Eric Wellington, 32, of Marysville was driving on Highway 46 near McMillan Road around 11:50 p.m. when he made an unsafe turn and hit Cirigo Arias, 50, of Kettleman City. Arias was killed instantly.
According to the CHP, Wellington was driving a 2002 Ford Expedition east on Highway 46 at an undetermined speed when he approached McMillan Road. Arias was driving west from McMillan Road when Wellington crossed the center line and hit the left front of Arias' 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix. The crash caused Wellington's car to flip over and block both lanes of the highway. The left front wheel of Arias' Pontiac was sheared off and the car was spun onto the westbound shoulder of 46. The highway was closed for three hours.
Wellington and his passenger, 27-year-old Rosalie Wellington, were taken to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center with moderate injuries.
