The California branch of the American Choral Directors Association recently honored Gary Lamprecht with its Swan Award, a lifetime achievement award recognizing outstanding directors who have retired from full-time conducting.
“It’s a really big deal,” said Lamprecht, adding that he knows several previous Swan Award recipients. “It’s very humbling to be in that company.”
The recipient of three Teacher of the Year awards, Lamprecht stepped down as choir director at San Luis Obispo High School in 2007 after 33 years of teaching music in San Luis Obispo and Morro Bay. Under his direction, choir students sang at New York City’s Carnegie Hall; toured Europe, New Zealand and Australia; and won honors at festivals in Fullerton, Reno, Nev., and Flagstaff, Ariz.
Lamprecht is active as the founder and director of the San Luis Obispo Vocal Arts Ensemble, which has performed in Canada, Europe and South America since its establishment in 1977. He also serves as artistic director of the California International Choral Festival and Competition, a biannual event founded in 2007.
The Vocal Arts Ensemble, which is slated to tour Scandinavia this summer, will perform June 16 at Mission San Miguel. For more information, call 541-6797 or visit www.vocalarts.org.
