Here is a listing of Memorial Day ceremonies around San Luis Obispo County. All events take place Monday. All are free, though there might be costs for barbecues that follow.
A “V” formation of World War II and other military aircraft will perform flyovers during ceremonies. Here are locations and estimated times of the flyovers: Paso Robles Cemetery 11 a.m., Templeton District Cemetery 11:04 a.m., Atascadero Cemetery 11:07 a.m., Santa Margarita Cemetery 11:12 a.m.; Los Osos Cemetery 11:30 a.m.; Atascadero “Faces of Freedom” Memorial at noon, with a 3:45 p.m. flyover at the Cayucos Pier. Sponsored in part by the Estrella Warbirds Museum of Paso Robles, the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. The Freedom Flight pilots, crew members and owners of these historic aircraft are all veterans dating from WWII to the present, organizers said. The planes may also be viewed during visiting hours at the Museum’s Hangar One Exhibit, 4251 Dry Creek Road, Paso Robles.
Wreath placement and luncheon. 11 a.m. at Arroyo Grande Cemetery, 895 El Camino Real. Wreath laying. A luncheon will follow at the Pismo Beach Veterans Memorial Building, 780 Bello St. 929-3925
Speakers, wreath placement and potluck. 11 a.m. at Atascadero Cemetery, off of Highway 41 at 1 Cemetery Hill Road, Atascadero. Hosted by Atascadero Veterans of Foreign Wars. Speakers and laying of a wreath. Potluck luncheon to follow at VFW Post 2814, 9555 Morro Road, Atascadero.
Speaker, wreath placement and barbecue. Noon at the “Faces of Freedom” Veterans Memorial, adjacent to Atascadero Lake Park and Charles Paddock Zoo on Highway 41 West. Guest speaker Iraq War veteran Maj. Tyson M. Avery, Marine Corps Reserve. Color guards, patriotic music and a wreath-laying ceremony. Followed by a barbecue sponsored by the Atascadero Kiwanis Club. 466-7076.
Wreath placement, salute and motorcyclists. 11 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial Building, 1000 Main St., Cambria. Featuring an upgraded flagpole and memorial. Wreath laying, taps, rifle salute; presentation of the colors, and a “Rolling Thunder” re-enactment by motorcycle-riding members of American Legion Riders Chapter 432.
”Lost at Sea” memorial. 3 p.m. at Cayucos Pier. In memory of veterans and those lost at sea. Officiated by the Cayucos-Seaside Rotary Club and Cayucos Lions Club.
“Heart of Courage” ceremony, skydivers and Estrella Warbirds flyover. 11 a.m. at Los Osos Valley Mortuary & Memorial Park, 2260 Los Osos Valley Road, Los Osos. Keynote speaker Don Cone, U.S. Army (retired). Band music starts at 10:30 a.m.; skydivers at 11 a.m.; flyover by Estrella Warbirds at 11:30 a.m. Lunch provided by the Kiwanis Club of Bay Osos. Donation.
Memorial Day observance. 11 a.m. at Paso Robles District Cemetery, 45 Nacimiento Lake Drive. Guest speaker Gary Nemeth. Hosted by American Legion Post 50 and VFW Post 10965.
Speaker, wreath placement and reading. 11 a.m. at the Pismo Beach Pier. Keynote speaker Gen. Michael P.C. Carns, who flew 200 combat missions in the F-4 Phantom II during the Vietnam War. Presentation of colors, MIA/POW honors, a presentation of wreath, and a reading of “The Unknown Soldier.”
Speakers, salute and barbecue. 11 a.m. at Templeton District Cemetery, 100 Templeton Road. Invocation and benediction by Chaplain Cleborn Benge, guest speaker pastor Stephan Orduno, presentation of colors, rifle salute. Barbecue chicken noon to 2:30 p.m. at the Legion Hall, 801 S. Main St. Prepared and served by Post 220 Legion and Auxiliary members. Adults $12.50 per plate, children $7 per plate, with proceeds benefiting the Legion’s boys and girls state programs. San Luis Obispo
“Veterans Remembrance” service. Co-sponsored by American Legion Post 66 and Wheeler/Smith Mortuary. 11 a.m. San Luis Obispo Cemetery, 2890 S. Higuera St. Music begins at 10:30 a.m. Raising of the flag, the Gettysburg Address and flag ceremony.
Memorial Day observance and Estrella Warbirds flyover. 10:30 a.m. at Santa Margarita Cemetery, one mile east of Santa Margarita on Highway 58. Featuring Boy Scout Troop 123 and a flyover by the Estrella Warbirds at 11:07 a.m.
