Atascadero Police Department officials have detained a minor who was among a group of three people who fled from police this morning at Atascadero Lake Park.
Officers were trying to talk to the three people informally when they fled in a car about 11:15 a.m., driving away at 40 to 50 mph in a parking lot before hitting a pole, said Cmdr. Joe Allen.
Police then chased after them on foot, catching one young man while the other two escaped. Atascadero police requested that the California Highway Patrol helicopter fly overhead to try to spot the other two suspects who were evading police.
Allen said that police were suspicious because of a vandalism incident at Atascadero Lake Park on Thursday night. But Allen said that police believe they fled because one of the young men had been driving without a license.
Never miss a local story.
Police are continuing the investigation. Allen said he didn’t know whether the other two young men were minors.
