A Santa Maria man has been formally charged in San Luis Obispo Superior Court with the gang-related, drive-by shooting murder of a 17-year-old boy in Oceano in November.
Armando Yepez has been charged with three crimes, including murder and committing a crime to benefit a gang, in addition to several enhancements to his potential penalty if he's convicted, including using a firearm causing death.
Sheriff Ian Parkinson said in a news conference last week that Yepez was immediately identified as a suspect in the shooting of Gabriel Salgado, which took place Nov. 17 in the 1700 block of 21st Street in Oceano. But it took six months for investigators to gather the evidence needed for an arrest.
Yepez is originally from Southern California.

Yepez appeared in court earlier this week, but he hasn’t entered a plea to the allegations, as the court worked out the details of appointing him a public defender.
Yepez is being held without bail. He’s scheduled to appear in court on June 13 before Judge Ginger Garrett for an arraignment and bail hearing.
