Correction: An earlier version of this story misstated the location of the fire. It took place in Nipomo.
A shed fire in Nipomo apparently ignited some ammunition and destroyed the structure Wednesday night.
Cal Fire received a call at 8:57 p.m. from a resident at 560 N. Thompson Road reporting a shed had caught fire.
When crews first arrived, “there was stuff popping when they pulled up,” Battalion Chief Steve Reeder said.
The owner told Cal Fire there was ammunition inside the shed, according to Reeder.
The fire was quickly put out after five engines responded, four Cal Fire and one from Santa Maria.
Owner Donna Mehlschau said she was in the house near the shed when she heard an explosion about 8:30. “I heard a great big boom.”
The rural property is on a 50-acre spread.
When fully engulfed, flames stretched high above the shed, which was gutted.
