Local Muslims will host members of the larger San Luis Obispo community during an open house Saturday at the Mosque of Nasreen, 1136 Walnut St. in San Luis Obispo.
The event, sponsored by the mosque and the Islamic Society of San Luis Obispo County, will take place between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.
The open house is designed to educate non-Muslims about the faith and its adherents, dispel stereotypes, and build bridges between various faith communities.
“Islam 101” presentations will take place in the main prayer hall at noon, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., followed by question-and-answer sessions. Refreshments and Islamic literature will be available.
“While Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world, it is also one of the most misunderstood religions,” mosque leaders said in announcing the event.
“Opening venues of communication and bridgebuilding between faith communities is essential to dispelling stereotypes and disseminating accurate information about the religion of about one-fifth of the world’s population,” they said.
“We welcome people of all faiths and walks of life to join us at the open house for a tour of the mosque, and a chance to meet local Muslim community members while learning more about Islam,” they wrote.
