Fire season is now underway in San Luis Obispo County.
Cal Fire announced today that additional fire engines as well as the Paso Robles Air Attack Base are now staffed.Fifty-seven seasonal firefighters are joining regular firefighting forces to staff 10 additional wildland fire engines.
At the airbase, a tactical aircraft and an air tanker are now ready for immediate dispatch to any fire in the county. Two fire engines and an additional air tanker will be staffed in a few weeks and 100 inmate firefighters are assigned to six hand crews.
This summer has the potential for being a bad fire season. Locally, rainfall levels ranged between 50 and 70 percent of normal, but late season rains caused a second grass crop that is already drying out.
Homeowners who live in rural areas are required to maintain 100 feet of defensible space around all structures on their property.
