UPDATE: A 55-year-old Oceano man arrested Thursday night after leading CHP officers on a high-speed chase on Highway 101 was booked into County Jail on suspicion of felony evading arrest and driving under the influence, according to Sgt. Patrick Curran of the CHP.
J. Pedro C. Lopez was first pulled over around 7 p.m. Thursday because he was driving below the speed limit – about 40 mph – on Highway 101, according to the CHP. He was headed from Atascadero to San Luis Obispo. After pulling over twice, Lopez sped away south, reaching speeds of 100 mph.
Less than 10 minutes later, Lopez crashed his car into the side of the road near the Monterey Street freeway off-ramp.
Lopez, who was not injured, was unresponsive when detained. While drunken driving is not suspected, a blood test was taken, and could reveal whether he was under the influence of a substance, said Curran.
Never miss a local story.
The CHP does not know why he fled from officers.
