Atascadero police said they arrested a local homeless man on suspicion of commercial burglary.
In the early morning hours of April 26 officers were dispatched to the North County Thrift Store at 7395 El Camino Real for a possible burglary in progress, according to an Atascadero Police Department press release issued on Thursday.
Someone driving by the business noticed that the front doors of the store were open and a man riding a “chopper style,” beach cruiser bicycle was riding away from there.
When officers arrived they confirmed that the business had been burglarized and immediately began looking for the burglar described by the caller.
Based on the description the caller had provided, officers identified the suspect as 29 year-old, Michael Keith Downs a local homeless man.
About 1 a.m., officers found Downs riding the bicycle in the area of Highway 41 and El Camino Real. Downs was arrested without incident.
During an interview he confessed to being involved at least two separate commercial burglaries including the North County Thrift Store, according to the press release.
Downs was booked into the San Luis Obispo County Jail on suspicion of commercial burglary.
