Highway 1 through Big Sur will be closed to traffic Sunday morning for the 27th annual Big Sur International Marathon. Nearly 11,000 runners are expected to take part in a range of events in Big Sur, Carmel and Monterey, including about 4,500 in the full 26.2-mile marathon.
The marathon begins at 6:45 a.m at Big Sur Station, just south of Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, and heads north to The Crossroads Carmel shopping complex on Highway 1 just south of Carmel Valley Road.
Northbound traffic will be stopped starting at 6:15 a.m. Sunday at the Big Sur Post Office; southbound traffic will be stopped starting at 4 a.m. at Carmel Highlands.
Northbound caravans led by California Highway Patrol cars will be allowed through at 7:10 a.m. starting from Andrew Molera State Park, 10:50 a.m. from Point Sur and 12:50 p.m. from Palo Colorado Road.
Southbound caravans will leave Crossroads at 9:45 a.m. and 11:40 a.m.
The highway is scheduled to fully reopen at 1 p.m.
