The number of students who still need to receive a booster shot protecting them against whooping cough in the San Luis Coastal Unified School District is down to 17 students.
A state law requires that all students in seventh through 12th grades get a whooping cough booster shot or a signed exemption within 30 days of the first day of school.
Starting today, students without the booster were not allowed to return to school.
The school district reported 130 students still needing the shot Friday. Many of those students provided documentation Monday showing they had received the shot, and more than a dozen students got the shot Monday morning at a free clinic hosted by the San Luis Obispo County Health Department.
