Opera San Luis Obispo has a new artistic director.
Brian Asher Alhadeff previously served as associate conductor of the company’s recent productions of “La boheme” and “The Barber of Seville.” He replaces Robert Ashens, who spent three years as artistic director.
“We are pleased to welcome Maestro Alhadeff to our opera company and to our Central Coast community,” Opera SLO board president Duejean Garrett said in a recent news release. “He brings a broad range of international artistic experience to our operatic endeavors.”
A seasoned conductor and music director, Alhadeff served as the artistic director of the Hradec Kralove International Summer Opera Festival in the Czech Republic for several years. He has a master's degree from California State University, Los Angeles, and a doctorate from UCLA.
Opera San Luis Obispo has also a new artistic adviser, Cal Poly music lecturer Jacalyn Kreitzer. In addition to helping the company develop young talent to fill chorus and supporting roles, she will assist Opera SLO’s community outreach efforts.
Formerly known as Pacific Repertory Opera, Opera San Luis Obispo was founded by Jill Anderson and Jean Cook in 1985. Today, the company presents operas, concerts and other events, as well as a summer day camp.
The company’s 2011-12 season opens Oct. 22 and 23 with a production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s “Yeoman of the Guard.”
