Utopia Bakery, with locations in San Luis Obispo and Pismo Beach, has closed.
The business was a longtime local fixture known for its European-style pastries, fresh-baked breads and cakes.
A sign on the door of the San Luis Obispo location at 2900 Broad St. reads: “To our customers: We have closed our doors due to the economy. We want to thank you very much for your patronage.”
Ownership at the business on Monday morning declined to immediately comment to The Tribune.
Never miss a local story.
The bakery was founded in 1995, but it gained its distinctly European flavor in 2001, when Dutch native Kees Docter took over.
Docter sold Utopia to Scott and MJ Lenhoff of Pismo Beach late 2009, and has since moved to Canada, where he operates another Utopia Bakery and Cafe, according to previous Tribune reports.
The Lenhoffs reopened the business in January 2010 after completing renovations, creating a new logo, and adding specials and pizza to the menu.
They opened a satellite location on Price Street in Pismo Beach in mid-2010.
