George Schmidt’s grand champion market steer fetched a whopping $40 a pound, earning the Templeton FFA student $52,000 at the California Mid-State Fair Junior Livestock Auction on Saturday. And Savannah Levisay’s grand champion market hog sold for $55 a pound, paying the Cerro Alto 4-H member $14,025.
Both will likely set records.
All together, 785 hogs, lambs, heifers, steers and goats were sold by 4-H and FFA students at the all-day auction at the Paso Robles fairgrounds.
Official results won’t be released for another 10 days, but unofficial estimates put the average price for hogs at $4.25 a pound, steers at $3.25 a pound and lambs at $6 a pound, about the same as last year. The average price for a heifer was $3,900, up a bit.
