Construction is complete on the $50 million first phase of the Highway 46 East widening project, ceasing all related detours and delays between Airport Road and Geneseo Road in Paso Robles.
The first phase of work, which began in spring 2008, widened that 5-mile section of the highway from two to four lanes.
Since February, crews have been working on the second phase of construction to expand another 5 miles of Highway 46 East from two lanes to four lanes from Geneseo Road to Almond Drive near Paso Robles.
The $72 million second phase is slated for completion by the end of 2013.
A third phase to widen another 5 miles of highway between Almond Drive and the Shandon Rest Area is expected to begin in late 2012.
The funding comes from Proposition 1B, a $20 billion transportation bond measure approved by voters in November 2006.
