Supporters and friends greeted Marine Lance Cpl. Shane Louk as he arrived Wednesday night at the San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport after an eight-month deployment in Afghanistan.
Louk, who grew up in Cambria, arrived about 8:41 p.m. to find waiting friends and local military groups, including a motorcycle brigade from the American Legion Riders.
His wife, 22-year-old Dakota Louk of San Luis Obispo, was the first to greet him.
The 23-year-old is returning from his first deployment with the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marines of Marine Corps Base Hawaii in Kaneohe Bay. The unit left in November 2010.
Never miss a local story.
Dakota Louk traveled to see him at the base when he first arrived in the United States about three weeks ago.
“It was really exciting,” she said. “It was totally surreal, but great.”
The couple plans to move into base housing at Kaneohe Bay. Shane Louk is scheduled for another deployment in 11 months.
But first he’s looking forward to spending time with friends during his three-week leave in San Luis Obispo. His family now lives in North Carolina, but his in-laws remain in Cambria.
The Military Parents of the Central Coast, the San Luis Obispo Welcome Home Troops Program and members of the Cambria American Legion Post No. 432 were also to attend the homecoming.
