The two men killed in a collision in Nipomo on Sunday afternoon have been identified as Juan Cruz Tenorio, 28, and Jose Oscar Hernandez-Ventura, 26, both of Santa Maria.
Officials believe Tenorio was the driver and Hernandez-Ventura a passenger in the back seat of the vehicle, according to a news release from the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Department.
Three vehicles were involved in Sunday’s crash about 4:20 p.m. along Hutton Road in Nipomo — the frontage road in front of the Santa Maria Speedway — according to the CHP.
The crash took place after one of the vehicles “spun out of control” and collided with another vehicle, according to a medic at the scene.
The back of the car that apparently lost control, described by the medic as “literally torn apart,” ended up in a strawberry field near a bend in the road off Joshua Avenue, about 100 feet from its front end.
Three additional people were taken to Marian Medical Center in Santa Maria for treatment. A medic radioed that she was taking a 58-year-old woman and a 56-year-old man to the hospital.
Another medic was taking a 39-year-old male passenger who walked away from the crash to Marian, despite his initial refusals of medical treatment.
The CHP is continuing to investigate the crash, according to the Sheriff’s Department.
